There is no easy yes or no answer to this question because not every story needs an epilogue while some really, really do. I believe this answer is very dependent on the content and ending of an author’s tale. It’s also based on whether the writer wants to add one or not. Do the characters have a future that needs to be shared in a short way at least one year after the main story’s ending? Sometimes they do and an epilogue is a perfect way to share what your characters are up to without writing a second book or adding too many unnecessary details to the current one. Harry Potter, for example, was a great epilogue opportunity because readers had followed those characters for seven books and they want to know what happens after everything was all said and done. Obviously, stories with a clear cut ending don’t need any further explanations because there is literally nothing else to tell. So as I said at the beginning of this post, the answer all depends on the story in question. There is no right or wrong when it comes to adding an epilogue to your work.
