Written by Erica Rose Jackson I started this Netflix series with no knowledge of what it was or what it was based on. I went in completely blind. This review will be spoiler free because I want all of you to binge The Umbrella Academy, but I do have some thoughts to share. Everything about this series is done so well, it makes it an easy binge but also leaves you wanting so much more. The first thing that made The Umbrella Academy so well done was the way popular music was interwoven into the scenes, especially the fight scenes. It’s much like Guardians of the Galaxy but done it its own way. On paper, the idea of some of the tracks featured in the show playing over a gunfight sounds ridiculous. In execution, it works perfectly and adds to the experience of the entire show. I’ve attached the Google Play Music playlist because there wasn’t one yet so you can all enjoy the amazing mix of songs featured throughout this series. Again, I don’t want to give away too much and even talking about some of the songs could ruin some of the show’s finest moments if you haven’t seen it yet. After the excellent use of music, the story and the casting are done seamlessly. I’ve never read the Dark Horse Comics this series was based upon, only because I’m not a huge comic fan, but I could get into them now just to go further into this story. The show is about family and it centers around six (seven sometimes) adopted siblings who almost all have special abilities. Their mother gave them real names but their father refers to them as numbers one through seven. Sir Reginald Hargreeves is a character I would like to know more about if the show gets a second season. Each actor brought their own excellence to their role. Ellen Page shined as Vanya aka Number Seven, the ‘extra ordinary’ girl. I’ve been a fan of hers since Juno. Tom Hopper was new to me but popular with fans of Game of Thrones fans as Luther (Number One). He had a really emotional role to play in this series and Hopper really brought it. David Castaneda brings Number Three, Diego, to life. He’s also new to me but I am a fan now. My favorite of the siblings was Allison, Number Four, played by Emmy Raver-Lampman. I only knew Ellen Page going in but every one of the actors involved with this project is outstanding. Two of the players truly shone though, above everyone else. Klaus was misunderstood, by his own doing, brother and he was brought to life by Robert Sheehan perfectly. Klaus’ character had a large story arc and Sheehan executed it so well. Number Five, his only identification, was played by Aidan Gallagher and he is going to be someone to watch. I can’t wait to see what Gallagher does next because he really brought a lot to his role as Five. The Umbrella Academy is a Netflix original you definitely want to check out. It’s so well executed and enjoyable! Take a look at the promo and then check out the playlist featuring the music from the series!
